On va travailler ensemble. »

PIERRE NANTEL ELECTED IN ARGENTEUIL: “NOW, WHAT MATTERS TO ME IS ARGENTEUIL”

LACHUTE – OCTOBER 5, 2026

By Stéphane R. Comtois
L’Écho d’Argenteuil

Argenteuil has changed political colours. At the end of the October 5 election night, Parti Québécois candidate Pierre Nantel won the riding of Argenteuil with 8,057 votes, representing 32.72% of the vote.

According to preliminary results released by Élections Québec, Nantel finished 1,718 votes ahead of his closest rival, Émilie Jutras of the Quebec Liberal Party, who received 6,339 votes, or 25.75%.

Marie-France Lemay of the Conservative Party of Quebec finished third with 5,157 votes, or 20.95%. Julie-Andrée Numainville of the Coalition Avenir Québec received 2,626 votes, or 10.67%, while Pénéloppe Dagenais-Lavoie of Québec solidaire received 1,765 votes, representing 7.17%.

Independent candidate Brigitte Roy received 376 votes (1.53%), Esber Khalil Esber of the Canadian Party of Quebec received 114 votes (0.46%), independent candidate Margaret Ethel Brunton received 98 votes (0.40%), and Martin Charron of Osons Québec received 89 votes (0.36%).

The results remained preliminary at the time of publication.

ELECTION NIGHT IN LACHUTE

L’Écho d’Argenteuil was in Lachute to follow the election night as the results came in.

Supporters, local residents and members of the Parti Québécois team in Argenteuil gathered at Brasserie Sir John to watch the vote count and follow the results live.

As the evening progressed, Pierre Nantel’s lead became clearer, eventually leading to the announcement of his election.

Visibly emotional as he addressed those gathered, Nantel first emphasized the work accomplished throughout the campaign.

“This is really very emotional. It was a lot of work,” he said before thanking the volunteers and everyone who had supported him over the past several weeks.

“NOW, WHAT MATTERS TO ME IS ARGENTEUIL”

With his election secured, Nantel quickly turned his attention to the work ahead in the riding.

“Listen, it is an incredible honour. I will do everything I can to rise to the challenge,” he said.

The newly elected MNA said he wants to maintain a direct connection with residents and ensure that his future constituency office remains accessible to the public.

“I hope the office will be open, with the door wide open, so that people can come and talk to us about what they are passionate about and what matters to them, because for me, now, what matters is Argenteuil. All ideas are welcome. We are going to work together.”

The idea of bringing people together was an important part of his victory speech. Nantel also acknowledged the differences among the many communities that make up the riding.

“You know how different Argenteuil is from one area to another. Bringing all these people together around a major project will be a wonderful challenge. And I’m going to do it with all of you.”

MAKING ARGENTEUIL “CARRY MORE WEIGHT”

Nantel also believes the region must make its voice heard more strongly in Quebec City.

“It has often been said that Argenteuil is a riding that isn’t isolated, but is neglected. Clearly, politically, we need to carry more weight,” he said.

Among the issues he intends to champion, the newly elected MNA mentioned the arts, the economy, hospital services and Autoroute 50, an issue that played an important role during the election campaign.

“We’re going to raise Argenteuil’s profile […] whether it’s the arts, the economy, a hospital that works better, or that damn Autoroute 50 that we’re finally going to fix.”

Nantel also acknowledged that he had expected a relatively close race. The results ultimately gave him a lead of 1,718 votes, or 6.97 percentage points, over Émilie Jutras.

A MINORITY PARTI QUÉBÉCOIS GOVERNMENT

Pierre Nantel’s victory in Argenteuil came during an election night marked by a significant change in Quebec’s political landscape.

At the provincial level, the Parti Québécois will form the next government, but without holding a majority of the seats in the National Assembly. Quebec will therefore be governed by a minority Parti Québécois government.

Nantel will enter the National Assembly as the MNA for Argenteuil and as a member of the party forming the government.

This new political reality will be particularly relevant to the regional issues he intends to bring forward in Quebec City, especially after emphasizing in his victory speech the need for Argenteuil to “carry more weight.”

MUNICIPAL ELECTED OFFICIALS ON HAND

Lachute Mayor and MRC d’Argenteuil Prefect Bernard Bigras-Denis, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Christian David, also attended the gathering and took the opportunity to congratulate Pierre Nantel on his election.

The two municipal elected officials spoke with the newly elected MNA during the evening.

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW MANDATE FOR ARGENTEUIL

Beyond the electoral victory itself, much of Pierre Nantel’s first message as MNA-elect focused on bringing together the different communities that make up Argenteuil.

The election results also show that support was divided among several political parties. With 32.72% of the vote, the Parti Québécois finished ahead of the Quebec Liberal Party at 25.75% and the Conservative Party of Quebec at 20.95%.

For Pierre Nantel, the evening of October 5 therefore marked both the end of an election campaign and the beginning of a mandate during which he says he intends to make Argenteuil’s voice heard more strongly in Quebec City.

Speaking before supporters, residents and members of his team gathered in Lachute, he summed up in just a few words the priority he now intends to give his mandate:

“Now, what matters to me is Argenteuil.”
